Things to Do in Mbale and Around Vihiga County

Planning a stay in Mbale, Vihiga County? Hills, caves, the equator, Kisumu and Kakamega: a local guide to the best things to see and do in western Kenya.

Mbale is a busy, friendly county town in the green heart of western Kenya, and it makes a surprisingly good base for exploring. Within easy reach you will find quiet hills with views towards Lake Victoria, sacred caves, Kenya's only tropical rainforest and the lakeside city of Kisumu. Here is our guide to making the most of your time in and around Mbale.

Where exactly is Mbale?

There are two towns called Mbale in East Africa, so it is worth being clear: this Mbale is the headquarters of Vihiga County in western Kenya, not the larger town of the same name in eastern Uganda. It sits on the main Kisumu–Kakamega road, between Majengo and Chavakali, roughly midway between Kisumu to the south and Kakamega to the north. Locally, the town is often simply called Maragoli, after the Luhya sub-group that has lived in these hills for generations.

Vihiga is one of Kenya's smallest and most densely populated counties, which means you are never far from a village, a market or a roadside kiosk. It also means that most of the interesting places below are an easy day out.

What can you do in Mbale town itself?

Mbale is a working town rather than a tourist resort, and that is part of its charm. Spend a morning simply walking around:

  • Browse the market and shops for fresh produce, household goods and a feel for everyday life in the county.
  • Watch the farming landscape on the edge of town. Vihiga's fertile soils support small family plots of maize, beans, vegetables, bananas and tea.
  • Chat to people. Western Kenya has a reputation for warm hospitality, and a friendly greeting will usually be returned with a story.

When you need a break, our restaurant is open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and welcomes visitors as well as hotel guests.

Is it worth hiking the Maragoli Hills?

Yes, if you enjoy a good walk with a view. The Maragoli Hills form the high ground between Vihiga and Kisumu counties and are described as the highest point in Vihiga County. The paths are rocky and steep in places, but on a clear day the summit rewards you with wide views over the Nyanza plains, and into the distance towards Lake Victoria and its islands.

Tips for walking in the hills

  • Start early, before the heat and before the afternoon clouds build.
  • Wear proper shoes; the rock can be slippery after rain.
  • Go with a local guide, both for the route and for the stories behind the landscape.
  • Carry water and a light rain jacket.

What are the Mungoma Caves?

Close to the Maragoli Hills lie the Mungoma Caves, a cluster of huge boulders with winding passages between them. They hold deep cultural meaning for the Maragoli community, who regard them as the home of Mulogoli, the founder of the Maragoli people. The caves are still used for ceremonies and rituals, so visit respectfully, ideally with someone from the area who can explain their significance and tell you what is and is not appropriate.

Can you stand on the equator near Mbale?

You can. The equator passes through Maseno, a university town on the Kisumu–Busia road to the south-west of Vihiga. A roadside globe marks the line, and Maseno University is often said to be the only university campus in the world that straddles the equator. It is a fun photo stop if you are driving between Kisumu and the Busia side of the region.

Which day trips are best from Mbale?

Kakamega Forest

Kenya's only tropical rainforest, and the last Kenyan fragment of the great Guineo-Congolian forest, is an easy excursion to the north. Expect monkeys, an extraordinary variety of birds and butterflies, and giant fig trees. We have written a full guide: a day trip to Kakamega Forest from Mbale.

The Crying Stone of Ilesi

Just south of Kakamega town, on a hillside off the Kakamega–Kisumu highway, stands a tall rock formation known locally as Ikhongo Murwi. A boulder balanced on a rock column once had water running down its face like tears, giving it its name. The flow has reportedly reduced in recent years, but the stone remains an important cultural landmark for the Isukha community.

Kisumu and Lake Victoria

Kenya's lakeside city is a short drive south. Visit the Kisumu Museum for an introduction to the natural and cultural history of the region, walk among impala at the small Kisumu Impala Sanctuary on the lake shore, or head to Dunga Beach to watch fishing boats come in and eat freshly cooked tilapia by the water.

Bullfighting in Kakamega

If you are visiting on the right weekend, you may be able to see traditional bullfighting at grounds such as Malinya in Kakamega County. Unlike the Spanish version, here two bulls are pitted against each other, and the events draw big, lively crowds. Ask locally about dates, as there is no fixed calendar.

When is the best time to visit?

Vihiga is green for a reason: it receives heavy rainfall for much of the year. The long rains usually fall from around March to May, with a shorter rainy season later in the year. Even in the drier months, afternoon showers are common, so plan outdoor activities for the morning and pack a light waterproof whatever the season.

Where should you stay?

A central base makes all of this easier. At Vectors Resort, on Mukingi Street in Mbale town, our rooms come with free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, hot showers and breakfast included, and the 24-hour front desk means early starts and late returns are never a problem.
