Getting to Mbale, Vihiga: Kisumu, Airport and Nairobi

How to get to Mbale in Vihiga County: flights to Kisumu airport, road trips and buses from Nairobi, matatus from Kisumu, and tips for a smooth arrival.

Mbale may feel tucked away among the green hills of western Kenya, but it is surprisingly easy to reach. Whether you are flying into Kisumu, taking the bus from Nairobi or driving yourself, this guide covers the main routes and a few practical tips to make arrival simple.

Where is Mbale?

First, a quick but important point: this guide is about Mbale in Vihiga County, Kenya, the county headquarters, not Mbale in eastern Uganda. When booking transport or searching maps, add "Vihiga" or "Kenya" to avoid confusion.

Mbale lies on the main road between Kisumu and Kakamega. It is roughly 23 km north of Kisumu and about 26 km south of Kakamega, so it sits comfortably between the two largest towns in the region. Vectors Resort is on Mukingi Street, in Mbale town.

How do you get to Mbale from Kisumu?

Kisumu is the nearest city and the usual gateway for visitors. The drive north to Mbale is short, though traffic leaving Kisumu can slow things down at busy times.

By taxi or private car

The simplest option, especially with luggage. Agree a fare before you set off, or use a ride-hailing app where available in Kisumu. Expect the journey to take somewhere between half an hour and an hour depending on traffic.

By matatu

Matatus (shared minibuses) run regularly along the Kisumu–Kakamega road. Ask for one heading towards Kakamega via Mbale or Chavakali, and tell the conductor you want to get off in Mbale town. It is the cheapest way to travel, but space for large bags can be limited.

How do you get to Mbale from Kisumu International Airport?

Kisumu International Airport is the closest airport to Mbale and has frequent domestic flights to and from Nairobi. Several airlines serve the route from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), including Kenya Airways and its low-cost subsidiary Jambojet, and there are also flights from Nairobi's Wilson Airport. The flight itself takes about an hour.

From the airport, the easiest way to reach Mbale is by taxi. Allow roughly an hour for the drive, depending on traffic through Kisumu. If you would like help arranging a pickup, contact us before you travel and we will do our best to point you to a reliable local driver.

How do you get to Mbale from Nairobi?

Fly to Kisumu

For most people this is the quickest door-to-door option: a short flight, then a taxi to Mbale. Book early for the best fares, particularly around public holidays.

Take a bus or shuttle

Several bus and shuttle companies run between Nairobi and Kisumu throughout the day, and some continue to Kakamega and beyond. A journey to Kisumu typically takes the better part of a working day. If your bus is heading to Kakamega, ask whether it passes through Mbale; many do, as Mbale is on the main road. Otherwise, change in Kisumu for a matatu or taxi.

Drive yourself

The road from Nairobi heads west through Naivasha and Nakuru, then on towards Kisumu, a total distance of roughly 350–400 km depending on your exact route. The scenery is varied and beautiful, with the Rift Valley and the tea country around Kericho along the way, but the journey is long. Most people take a full day, with breaks. Avoid driving the final stretches after dark if you are unfamiliar with the roads.

Tips for a smooth arrival

  1. Share your arrival time. Our front desk is open 24 hours, so late arrivals are fine, but it helps us to know when to expect you.
  2. Save our number. Call or WhatsApp +254 708 096997 if you get lost or delayed.
  3. Use a map pin. Ask us for our location on WhatsApp and share it with your driver.
  4. Carry some cash. Mobile money is widely used in Kenya, but small cash is handy for matatus and tips.
  5. Pack for rain. Western Kenya is green because it rains often; keep an umbrella or light jacket in your hand luggage.

"If you are arriving late at night, just send us a message with your flight or bus details. Someone will be at the front desk whatever time you get in." – the Vectors Resort team

Travelling for an event?

If you are coming to Mbale for a meeting, workshop or conference, it is worth coordinating travel with the organisers, especially if a group is flying in together. Our conference hall hosts events for 10 to 150 people, and we can accommodate out-of-town participants in our rooms. Event planners may find our guide on how to plan a conference in Vihiga County useful.

Once you are here

Mbale is a great base for exploring. Kakamega Forest, the Maragoli Hills and Kisumu's lakeshore are all within reach for day trips; see our guide to things to do in Mbale and Vihiga County for ideas.
